Del Cerro (Spanish for "of the hill") is an upscale residential neighborhood of approximately 27,000 residents. It is east of downtown San Diego, and borders the communities of San Carlos, Allied Gardens, College Area, Grantville, and the City of La Mesa, and is adjacent to Lake Murray and San Diego State University. Many homes afford their owners sweeping canyon and distant mountain views to the east, and vistas that extend all the way to Coronado to the west.
Because of the views, Del Cerro real estate garners higher prices than its surrounding neighbors. In 2018 the median sales price of Del Cerro single family homes was $698,430 (low sales price was $370,000 and the high sales price was $1,460,000). And for condos the median sales price was $320,000 (low sales price was $172,000 and the high sales price was $677,850).
The 1950s-style homes have distinct architectural charm and large, well-maintained lawns; many residents are second-generation owners. Neighborhoods within Del Cerro include the wealthy Del Cerro Heights, Princess Del Cerro and Old Del Cerro.
Del Cerro residents enjoy easy access to I-8 and a quick commute to downtown as well as to the major shopping and entertainment areas of Mission Valley and Fashion Valley, and the beaches just a few miles further west. Within the community itself, Del Cerro Shopping Center is the major hub of shopping and dining. Public schools are a part of the San Diego City School District.
